PORCELAIN STAIN REMOVAL

As your porcelain ages and scratches appear due to cleaning, minerals from the water can cling to the scratches and cause rust. Use any commercail product with lime in it...or distilled white vinegar works too!

Here's how to tackle the project quickly and effeciently:

Put on rubber gloves and wet the sink. If you are using a commercial product, read the directions carefully. Some can cause even more etching! Test first. If it's safe, wet a sponge and gently work the product into the stained surface. If you have a persistent stain, make a paste of the product with a few drops of water and let it sit for a few minutes.

Feeling a little lazy? Saturate a folded paper towel with vinegar, place it over the stain and wrap it tightly with plastic wrap - taping it tightly is an added bonus. Leave it overnight, remove the cloth, and wipe (or scrub lightly) the rust right off!

PORCELAIN ENAMEL COOKTOP SURFACES require a slightly different method. Avoid heavily abrasive cleaners, pads and steel wool. Porcelain surfaces may etch or discolor when a spill is high in sugar or acids, so wipe up immediately. And NEVER wipe a hot porcelain stove top with a cold cloth....it may crack!

Marble Staircase - A HOLLYWOOD

Marble flooring has become one of the hottest new materials on the market - and for the extra extravagant (and bigger budgets!) marble staircases are at the top of the wish list. The elegant and natural beauty of marble offers a luxurious, sleek and graceful look which dates back to the glamorous movies of old Hollywood. Who wouldn't feel like Fred Astaire or Ginger Rogers walking down a staircase made of this elegant natural stone?
In addition to the natural beauty that marble possesses, marble is also a much sought after material because of its resistance to fire, as well as its natural strength and hardness. It's not just beautiful, it is strong too! And you won't have to worry about stains like you would with a carpet runner - Marble also possesses a rigidness that resists most stains.
And, to keep you're sought after marble staircase at its beautiful best, don't use bleach or any acidic based cleaners - A damp cloth or mop is the best way to remove any dirt or dust. So....not only is a stone staircase luxury at its finest, it's also easy to maintain. Just one MORE reason your Bedrock designer should help you fabricate the marble staircase of your dreams!

STONE FLOORS FOR THE LOOK YOU WANT

Natural stone floors are not a new concept. For centuries stone flooring has been used in homes, businesses, on streets and sidewalks around the world. Today, stone floors are one of the most desired design trends available to homeowners. Consider these important points before you decide on what floor you want under foot:

- If you are going for a subtle, serene look - cool and calm colors should flow uninterrupted from one room to the next. A uniform color with little "movement" work well. Light colors, little veining in stones such as limestone and travertine are the ideal choice for a subdued appearance in a modern or minimalist setting.

- For a rustic or earthly look, slate is a great option. The deep colors and textures provide a casual look, and slate can take abuse, too! From deep tones to muted, earthlike combinations, you can build many styles around slate.

- If cool, rich and elegant is the look you desire, polished marble and granite is the perfect choice. While both stones have veining and lots of movement, they make an unforgettable statement.

- Tumbled stone is used to create an antiquated feel that goes perfect in homes that reflect old-world charm. The worn, weathered style creates a warm look that endures.

Your Bedrock and Rite-Loom designer can help you select just the right style for your stone floor. If you're ready to make a change, step on it and get the look you want TODAY!

They don't just look great. They don't just increase the value of your home or create a focal point for your living room or outdoor patio --- fireplaces can also save you big money! Update your fireplace design and see a big drop in your energy bills. Follow these important tips:

- Include the addition of a fireplace insert which will dramatically affect of the design.

- For outdoor fireplaces, natural STONE is by far the most popular. Your choices are virtually unlimited and can includes either a gas or wood burning feature. Obciously, the wood burning option is more energy efficient as it also adds drama to any outdoor environment.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR STONE FIREPLACE

It's very important to seal your stone to prevent dirt build up and stains, but many people never think to seal their fireplace! If you haven't already, follow the steps below to get your fireplace in tip top shape, then call Bedrock Stone Fabrication or Rite-Loom Flooring and schedule a technician to seal that stone.

Use Salt

Regular users of their fireplace swear that salt will prevent soot stains and help clean them if you have them. Do this regularly and your spring clean up will be a breeze.

AVOID Household Cleaners

If you do have soot stains that have solidified, remember that these are carbon deposits so are full of grease. Resist the temptation to apply bleach as it may discolor your stone. Play it safe and just use some hot water and a stiff brush.

Once you have cleaned and sealed the fireplace, use a stone soap for maintenance every month. This will leave a dirt repellent layer on the surface (a little like polishing your car).

Now, go light that fire and enjoy the ambiance that only stone fireplace can evoke.

THE POWER OF A POULTICE

Poultices have been used to remove stains for centuries. Not only are many poultices natural so they are considered "green", they also work!! Basically, a poultice is a liquid cleaner mixed with a white absorbent material to form a paste. The poultice is spread over the stained area of about 1/4 inch thick, then covered in plastic and left for 24-48 hours. The poultice will draw out the stain but the process may have to be repeated a few more times.

Basic Poultice: Make a poultice of baking soda and water or soda water

DON'T USE: vinegar, lemon juice or other cleaners containing acids on marble, limestone, granite, travertine or onyx

DON'T USE: cleaners that contain acid such as bathroom cleaners, grout cleaners or tile cleaners

DON'T USE: abrasive cleaners

DON'T MIX: bleach and ammonia

Hard to repair stains like copper, iron or rust should be handled by a professional. And, don't forget to SEAL your stone! Daltile's innovative ProAdvanced Protection Program protects your countertops and your investment.

So....if you have a stain, make a poultice. To prevent a stain on your new countertop, ask your Bedrock designer for Daltile's ProAdvanced Protection Program.

LIMESTONE ADDS CLASSIC SUMMER STYLE

Whether you are using this traditional stone in an elaborate bathroom or the lobby of a busy commercial office building....Limestone adds a classic style that transcends time. Dating back to ancient times, Limestone fits into every design motif - from ultra modern to Renaissance. Designers today use this smooth, evenly colored natural stone with antiques because its calm, even texture complements virtually any type of wood. Use limestone for flooring, backsplashes, walls and showers. Velvety and luxurious, limestone conveys a feeling of simplicity and serenity. Also perfect for minimalist settings, Limestone is formed by the sedimentary process underground and in riverbeds. In fact, you will often find seashells and fossils embedded in its surface - bringing the ocean right into your home!

While the colors available are similar to travertine, it rarely has holes and despressions.

If you are looking for a sleek, modern feel in hues of cream, ivory, gold, sand or smoky blue - go to Bedrock Stone Fabrication or Rite-Loom Flooring and ask for LIMESTONE - it will be a graceful addition to any decor.

IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS!!

Your Rite-Loom Designer has helped you select the perfect slab. Your Bedrock fabricator is creating the countertop of your dreams. You think you are finally done making decisions about your kitchen or bath update and they ask: "What type of edge detail would you like?" Don't rush through this important element! That wonderful little "detail" supplies the finishing touch that takes a pretty countertop and makes it beautiful!

From a sleak, modern flat edge to a multidimensional decorative profile - your options are as varied as the looks they represent. Ideally, you should select your profile choice based on the size of the slab you have selected (either 2 or 3 centimeters). Cost of your edge detail can escalate based on the lamination size and thickness. The most popular designs include Bullnose, Bevel and Ogee. Unique trends now include Straight Edge with Apron (perfect for Modern Designs) or the Tuscan Curve (perfect for now popular Renesance decors). Any way to cut it - your countertop edge detail is one finishing touch you should take your time making. It may be your last, but it will be one of your most important!

INTERESTING STONE OPTIONS

We all know the popularity of natural stone, and granite is the homecoming queen of building materials. But, there is a host of other unique and interesting stone utilized at Bedrock and the applications can be astounding! Top designers and architects are stepping into new neighborhoods of opportunity and we would like to feature some of their favorites in this blog. Let's start with.....
SLATE
Slate is a fine grained rock that is derived from sediments of clay and salt. Slate can vary in composition and durability because the alteration of minerals can sometimes be consistent. But...this is not a bad thing. This is what makes slate unique. Yes, it is just as durable as granite and marble, but it also offers unique sophistication and style options that creative designers love. Offered in dramatic colors of red, gray, blue and green, slate is a great choice for kitchen countertops because it has low porosity so it does not require sealing. Slate countertops are also low maintenance, are impervious to stains and heat, and can be kept clean with any household cleaner and a weekly application of mineral oil.
So if you're looking for a unique, high design look for your kitchen, bath or flooring - check out slate. It has style and personality that can transform your home.

OUTDOOR ISLAND STYLES

There is a lot to consider before you start designing you outdoor kitchen. How you USE the space is top consideration, as it dictates just about every aspect of your plan. At the center of your outdoor kitchen is your built-in BBQ island and there are three popular styles:

Basic: Most islands feature a grill, a sink, and a small counter for food prep. This basic design works for most cooks, but if you are a gourmet, you may want to consider something larger.

U-Shape: The U-shape island promotes distinct zones for cooking, prep and eating. One great advantage is that food can be served direct from the grill to your guest, putting it center stage for entertaining and conversations.

L-Shape: This configuration allows for separate spaces for cooking and preparing food and seating arrangement are usually next to the grill.

Other popular additions to your outdoor kitchens are refrigerators, fireplaces, fire-pits, pizza ovens and beverage bars. Bedrock Stone Fabrication can customize just the look you want. Add in a dining set, comfortable sofa, outdoor area rug and lighting and you'll never hang out in the house again!!

IT'S BBQ TIME

IT'S BBQ TIME and also the time of year when we look outside to our aging equipment and long for that perfect outdoor space. A 2009 survey taken by the Hearth, Patio and Barbeque Association (yes, there really is one!) detailed that Americans spent over $150 million on home renovations and one third was for outdoor living spaces! If you are planning to tackle yours, ask yourself these important questions:

  • How much is your budget?
  • What type of cooking will you do and how often?
  • Will you eat your meals outside or take the food in?
  • Will you use the BBQ to host parties?
  • What kind of furniture do you like?
  • Will you be using the space year round or just Spring and Summer?
Consider the above and let Bedrock Stone Fabrication get your design started. Our outdoor spaces offer some of the best designs in the county. Watch for our blog next week on three common BBQ island designs. Let's do this together!

Crazy Weather

This week's crazy weather wreaked havoc on our schedule at Bedrock. Granite and stone won't get damaged from a windy down pour, but our installers are perfectionists and they do a lot of specialty fabrication right on the job, so Mother Nature did set us back a bit. The good that sprang from the dark and dreary days though, came from some unexpected sources. Former (but always welcomed) clients!! We had done some amazing work on their new home along the coast and they were back with some new plans for an enclosed veranda - a gift of an idea born while they watched the storm beat up their beautiful back yard. Thousand of dollars in landscaping blown away - literally! While they pondered the loss of a priceless soft scape that they had nurtured for years, they realized that a much better use of their money would be a timeless hard scape that could last for decades. Outdoor living spaces are all the rage and Bedrock shines in the sun as well as indoors. We'll be designing a new fireplace, outdoor kitchen and an amazing water wall that complements their pool and beautiful view of the ocean. It's an exciting project that will be done just in time for sunny days - which is something we ALL look forward to.

Do YOU have an idea that warms your heart? Let Bedrock set lay the groundwork and set it in stone!
